Concept art for the BACK TO THE FUTURE comic I’m writing and drawing!

Juuuuuust kidding.

Not long ago I asked myself what I would do if I were going to make a Back to the Future comic. I came to the conclusion that I would want to do a story focused a bit more on Jennifer, maybe dealing with her family lineage in some way. It could pick up after the events of part III. The Doc is gone and blah blah blah. I got a lot of sketchy ideas about it that I will never take any further. One of the ideas was 1955 Doc creating a time machine out of a 55 Gullwing Mercedes. How that makes any sense I’ll never bother to figuring out.

Anyway, in honor of Back to the Future Day I decided to sketch this up real fast.

Pull list for Oct. 21, 2015!

Awesome to see Dottie on the cover to The Fade Out #10! This is the best book of these incredibly talented creators careers. Also from Image, Invincible #124 and Shutter #16!

image

The last issue of Usagi was about a one armed warrior and I had a broken arm while reading it. Coincidence? YES. If a mountain comes into my life soon, I’ll reexamine this. Another long going classic this week: Astro City#28!

image

I love the lake mermaids in Lumberjanes #19!

Karnak is a big crazy-head-weirdo and i LOVE HIM. This is a perfect character for the madness of Warren Ellis. I hope he sticks with it for a fully developed story vs the brief perfection of Moon Knight.

Speaking of! The second Epic Collection of the classic Moench/Sienkiewicz Moon Knight series!

Amazing Spider-Man #2 and Astonishing Ant-Man #1 cover all your bug hero needs. Amazing #1 was certainly worth last month’s 6 bucks.  That side of the Marvel Universe has never been better. I’m really excited to see Ant-Man taking steps closer to the ideas writer Nick Spencer explored in the incredible series Superior Foes of Spider-Man. I have a soft spot for B-List villains. Also out this week, SHIELD #11!

image

My two favorite Secret Wars books are both out this week: 1872 #4 and Weirdworld #5. They. Are. PERFECT.

NEW AVENGERS #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m not a huge fan of the art style, BUT, the writer is one of the best new voices at Marvel and I LOVE this line up.

image

Captain America: Sam Wilson #1! Nick Spencer has done some great work with low-level characters at Marvel and I’m excited to see what he’ll do with a true flagship book. And Daniel Acuna is impossible to beat.

image

Spider-Gwen! Nothing new here, but this is a great title that will hopefully find an even larger audience with a new #1.

Ms. Marvel is the highest issue number at Marvel this week with issue #19. New #1 soon! Secret Wars continues with Civil War #5 and A-Force #5.

image

Don’t miss Insufferable #6, Jem and the Holograms #8, Strange Fruit #2, War Stories #13 and Lumberjanes: Beyond Bayleaf #1!

Image all stars this week: East of West #21, Sex Criminals #13, Walking Dead #147, Wicked & Divine #15 and Low #10!

Brian K. Vaughn and Cliff Chiang? Papergirls #1 is the book to beat this week. Someday, Image Comics will rule the world. Southern Bastards #11, 8House #4 and We Stand Guard #4.

Marvel skips to the end on Secret Wars and gets back to the regular, slightly different Marvel Universe. These comics are grotesquely expensive and will definitely effect how many new Marvel books I pick up. They look great, but any book I had the slightest uncertainty on is CUT. My new launches for the week are Avengers #0, Amazing Spider-man #1 and Dr. Strange #1.

I AM SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS DOCTOR STANGE COMIC!!!!!!

image

Secret Wars #6, 1602 Witch Hunter Angela #4 and Siege #4 feel a little overshadowed, but I’m still really excited to read them. Good comics are good comics, even if the supposed tension is dulled.

Skipping the new Iron man book, despite David Marquez’s amazing art,  as Bendis has been a real let down recently. Still sticking with Powers, which continues with it’s, what, fifth? #5 issue.

image

Action Comics #45 from DC! A drawing of Superman with blood is always weird to see…

image

The Funniest comics this week are no doubt Public Relations #2 and Jughead #1! I still can’t believe Zdarsky is on Jughead. AMAZING.

Pull list for Sept. 30th!

Finally!

Sandman Overture #6. Gonna have to reread the first 5 before I tackle this. That will make a nice evening, but seriously, comics, plan better schedules than this. Also out this week, Superman #44!

image

From Image this week, From Under Mountains #1, Sex #24, They’re Not Like Us #8, and Stray Bullets: Sunshine and Roses #8!

image

The new Archie continues with issue 3 and Kaijumax vol. 1 concludes with #6!

Marvel rounds up this small week with E is for Extinction #4 and Shield #10! Waid is obviously having a lot of fun playing in the Marvel toy box. Great guest stars in almost every issue.

So, about that Harvey Award

zdarsky

This weekend I won the Special Award for Humor from the Harveys, a thing I talked about earlier when I was nominated. It’s nice having people realize how special I am and how humor I am, and I truly appreciate everyone who voted for me, but the award, as it stands, doesn’t make a lot of sense.

The fact that I was nominated for a humor award for SEX CRIMINALS without the writer of said series, my beloved chum, Matt Fraction, is wrong. On every level. I pointed this out to the Harvey Awards and told them I wished to have Matt on the ballot with me, or to remove me completely, and they declined to do either.

They said, and I quote; “We believe any collaborative process which the creators believe is equally divided makes this difficult.  It’s unfortunate this is not a judgment call for us to make - but it’s not.”

Except for the fact that it is. They created a category designed to highlight individuals, sometimes out of a team, with no recognition of what has been contributed and by whom. The writer of our comic supplies 90% of the humor! This is the Harvey Awards’s category, so the ultimate judgement call is theirs.

Suppose a group of people successfully nominated me for my work on Green Lantern, a comic I’ve never worked on (YET). Would the Harveys simply shrug and go, “Oh well, out of our hands?” Of course not. Because it would be erroneous. Just like nominating me for the humor in Sex Criminals without Matt Fraction is erroneous.

I put forth the idea to the Harveys that the category simply be changed in the future to “Best Humor Publication,” in order to recognize the end result, instead of imagining who contributed what in a team effort. They could do that or just keep the nominations to creators who do all the work on their books, like Ryan Browne or Kate Beaton. They never responded to me, so I’m putting this idea out to you, the people who vote and are voted on. In an industry that daily has to contend with lopsided credits in the media, how can we allow ourselves to contribute to it with this award? Let’s make this category reflect the teams who deserve it.

Until then, I can’t accept the award. I love the people who voted for me, but I can’t abide by the rules set in place to allow such a thing. If, for some reason, it’s already en route to me, I’ll just carve Matt’s name into it and raffle it off for the HERO INITIATIVE.
